Calvin - Men’s Track & Field Finishes 10th at GVSU Mike Lints

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's track & field team competed in a field of NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA competition on Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Meet. The Knights finished in 10th place with 16 points.
"We really had some solid performances today," said head coach Bret Otte. "I was really impressed with some of our performances today. I am excited to build off today and head into next week."
Senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 400-meter dash at 50.33 in 16th place.
Senior Nate Veldboom (East Jordan, Mich./Ellsworth) crossed the finish line at 2:04.44 in the 800-meter run in 41st place.
In the 1-mile run, freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clocked in at 4:29.66 in 25th place.
Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Ill./John Hersey) scored points for Calvin in the 3000-meter run in third place at 8:28.50. The 14th-fastest time in NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Jason Klaassen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) led a pack of Knights in the 5000-meter run in 21st place at 16:15.32.
In 17th place in the pole vault was sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), clearing 13-11 ¼ feet.
Junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Calif./Arrowhead Christian) had a leap of 21-4 ¼ feet in the long jump on Saturday to finish in fourth place. He recorded his second fourth-place finish of the day in the triple jump at 42-1 1.2 feet.
In the shot put, junior Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the Calvin pack in 18th place with a throw of 42-11 feet. VanHouten had the longest Calvin throw in the weight throw in 14th place at 50-9 ½ feet.
The Knights return to action on Friday at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas.
