NMU - Wildcats Compete at SVSU for Jet's Pizza Invite

SAGINAW, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Track & Field competed at the Jet's Pizza Invitational Friday evening and Saturday. A number of athletes turned in top-10 performance, highlighted by a near record breaking 4x400-meter relay performance.



In the 4x400-meter relay, the Wildcats missed breaking the school record by .4 seconds after conversions. The team of freshman Sydney McPeters (Sugarland, Texas), junior Lynsey Collins (Escanaba, Michigan), junior Paige Dutcher (Williamston, Michigan), and junior Shayla Huebner (Marquette, Michigan) were runner-ups in the event with a time of three minutes, 53.69 seconds



Huebner also competed in the 400-meters, placing fifth with a time of 56.88 seconds. Dutcher finished 10th in the same event. Peters and Collins placed 13th and 14th.



Freshman Nina Augsten (Koenigsbronn, Germany) advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with the fourth best preliminary time. She also placed fourth in the finals with a time of 9.16 seconds.



Running in the 3,000-meters, sophomore Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Michigan) turned in a sixth-place performance. With a time of 10:04.00, Smith was less than five seconds off earning an NCAA Division II provisional time.



Senior Samanthia Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica) earned a career-best in the weight throw with a third-place finish. A toss of 53 feet, 11.50 inches was a half in better than her toss at the Northern Challenge a week ago. Johnson also competed in the shot put, placing 20th.



Junior Michelle Juergen (Gau-Odernheim, Germany) earned a pair of top-five finishes in field events, placing fifth in both the long jump and high jump. In the long jump, Juergen cleared a distance of 17'04.50" inches, while clearing a height of 5'02.25" in the high jump.



Other top-performers for the Wildcats include senior Kieren Becker (Fowler, Michigan) who finished 12th in the 800-meters, freshman Holly Blowers (Marquette, Michigan) who finished 17th in the mile, and sophomore Abby Christmas (Montague, Michigan) who placed 17th in the triple jump.



Next weekend, NMU will continue their indoor season in Steven's Point, Wisconsin with the Pointer Invite. The meet is set for February 3 on campus at the University of Wisconsin-Steven's Point.



The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships will be held February 23-24 with Grand Valley State University hosting the meet. The 2017 NCAA II Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for March 9-10 in Pittsburgh, Kansas.
