VANCOUVER, Wash. – Sophomore Kelli Smith posted a 55th place finish and freshman Alexis McConnell a 66th overall finish as the duo led the women's cross country team at the 2017 NAIA Cross Country Championships. The pair will now head into the Track & Field indoor season which kicks off in two weeks at Grand Valley State.
In their first ever appearance at the national meet, the young duo of Kelli Smith and Alexis McConnell previewed what should be a bright future for those two but also the women's distance program as a whole.
Competing against 35 teams and almost 100 other individuals for a total of 338 runners, Smith and McConnell each placed inside the top 70 overall.
Smith was the top Golden Eagle finisher as she came in 55th with a 5K time of 18:36 while McConnell was just behind her teammate in 66th in 18:42.
British Columbia won the team championship as they were followed by Wayland Baptist, Oklahoma City and Aquinas. Fellow WHAC school Madonna finished ninth overall while the top individual from the conference was Aquinas' Melissa Winchester in 18:00.
