DEXTER, Mich. - Michigan State cross country dominated at the EMU Fall Classic on Friday afternoon at the Hudson Mills Metropark. Nine Spartans took top-10 finishes in the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter races.

“They did really well. We’re excited with how they behaved. They really got out there and raced with a high level of intent,” Associate Head Coach Lisa Senakiewich said. “They were competitive across the board, and we saw everyone apply the lessons that they’ve learned. We’re very happy with the outcome. We always look forward to giving them a chance to learn.”

On the women’s side, sophomore Mackenzie Weiler took first place with a time of 17:51.7. Green and White runners took six out of the top-10 finishes with junior Kennedy Beazley in third (18:03.4), sophomore Karrigan Smith in fifth (18:06.7), junior Julia Rustmann in eighth (18:28.3), freshman Samantha Hanson in ninth (18:28.8) and senior Aubrey Wilberding in 10th (18:32.1). Junior Kayla Kavulich crossed the finish line next with a time of 18:48.9, followed by freshmen Patricia Girardot (20:23.0) and Kayla Wiitala (20:23.1).

Junior Brian Kettle was the first Spartan to cross the finish line on the men’s side, coming in third place with a time of 15:14.3. Sophomore Winter Romeyn was next in fifth place (15:22.3) and senior Andrew Middleton rounded out the Spartans in the top-10 with a ninth place finish (15:38.3). Freshman Avery Felty notched a 13th place finish (15:47.0), and freshman Nick Hirschenberger crossed the finish line at 15:57.8. Freshman Lance Rambo ended the race with a time of 16:09.1, followed by Dan Kroth at 16:18.2. Junior Andrew O’Connor rounded out the Spartan effort with a time of 16:53.4.

“We saw really good progress by Mackenzie Weiler. She was able to step into her own, and it was great to see growth from her. We also saw progress from Kennedy Beazley, and really from the group as a whole. They built off each other. On the men’s side, Brian Kettle really put everything out there and raced to the best of his ability. Winter Romeyn did as well, and he’s learning to let go. Coach Drenth asked them today to let it all out there, and if you end up with wobbly legs at least you learned something, and Winter really applied that.”

Up next, the Spartans prepare for Big Ten Championships on Oct. 29 hosted by Indiana. The men’s 8K will begin at 10:45 a.m., followed by the women’s 6K at 11:45.
