"I can't say enough about today," commented WMU head coach Kelly Lycan. "We really came out to run tonight in front of our home fans, defending our course. We fought as hard as we could against the defending MAC champions. It was great to see Hanne, Claire and Sarah back tonight after missing last week with some injuries. Our freshman also improved so much on their times and that credit goes to coach Taryn Sheehan. Overall I am proud of the team and we are making big steps in the right direction."
Eastern Michigan finished with a team score of 24 while the Broncos finished with 35. Christensen led all runners with a personal record 6K time of 20.44 while Gilbert also ran a personal record 6K taking fourth overall with a time of 21.36. The Eagles claimed the remaining spots in the top-five to take the event.
Christensen's personal record time was a 40 second improvement winning the invitational and the first Bronco to do so since Maria McDaniel (20.33.80) back in 2015. The senior impressively defeated Eastern Michigan's NCAA Championships qualifier Jordan McDermitt and the 2017 Outdoor Track and Field 5K Runner-Up Alsu Bogdanova by over 37 seconds.
After nursing a sore foot last week, Gilbert broke her 6K personal record by 20 seconds this evening finishing second for the Broncos. Junior Sarah Anderson also cracked the top-10 crossing the finish line with a time of 22.06 finishing third for the Broncos and seventh overall. Sophomore Brittney Hall and freshman Emily Fonzi rounded out the Bronco top-five finishers crossing the finish line with times of 24.00 and 24.06, good for 17th and 18th overall.
Other finishers for WMU include Rebecca McNamee (24.11), Courtney Allen (24.25), Autumn Lewis (24.33), Haley Ritsema (25.02), Mattie Goodwin (25.41) and Kayla Dominguez (26.20).
The Broncos are back in action next Friday, Sept. 15 in East Lansing at the Spartan Invitational.
