DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team began its 2017 season today, Sept. 1, at the Michigan Open in Dexter, Mich. The Green and White saw the opener as an opportunity for the freshman class to gain valuable experience, while all seven freshmen, six of which ran unattached, received their first taste of collegiate competition.

Kaitlyn Culler (Fremont, Ind. - Fremont) was the lone freshman representative for EMU, placing 23rd with a time of 20:41.5. The other two harriers competing for Eastern were seniors Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran) and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. - Penn), who finished back-to-back at 21st and 22nd with times of 19:38.9 and 19:48.1, respectively.

"This was just a starting point for our season as we work towards running our full squad next weekend," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "We came off a tough week at camp but the girls who raced had a solid showing. I was particularly pleased with Madison Distelrath today. She looked strong throughout the race."

Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind. - Homestead) finished atop EMU's unattached freshmen, placing fourth with a time of 18:46.4. Following Distelrath were freshmen Tarynn Cullings (Medina, Ohio - Medina), coming in at eighth in 19:27.9, Kathryn Chevoor (Northville, Mich.) finishing 10th in 19:39.1, Kayla Mayer (Hilliard, Ohio - Hilliard Darby), and Rachel Brougher (Columbus, Ind. - Columbus North) placing 12th and 13th with times of 19:56.6 and 19:58.2, respectively, and Mikaylie Park (Chardon, Ohio - Chardon) who rounded out EMU's unattached harriers at 15th, with a time of 20:37.4.

The Eagles return to action at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday, Sept. 8, in Kalamazoo, Mich.
