GVSU - Lakers Compete On Day 2 At NCAA Track & Field Championships

The Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams both competed on day two at the NCAA DII National Championships Friday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Laker women are sixth with 16 points, while the GVSU men are eighth with 12 points. Competition will run through Saturday.
Mary Hecksel earned all-america honors in the discus with a third-place finish (52.27), while Dajsha Avery finished 17th with a toss of 44.92.
Rachel Walters qualified for the finals in the 800 meter run with a third-place finish in the prelims (2:06.69), while Tiara Wiggins also advanced to the finals in the 100 hurdles with an eighth-place finish (13.79). Angela Riter finished 13th in the 200 meter run (23.98) and the Lakers' 4x400 meter relay just missed the finals with a ninth-place finish in the prelims as Chant'e Roberts, Ritter, Jessica O;Connell and Rachel Walters crossed the finish line in 3:43.21.
Gary Hickman finished 12th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.29, while Samora Nesbitt finished 13th in the triple jump (49-10.5). GVSU's 4x400 meter relay team that consisted of Thomas Capers, TJ Burnett, Chaz Porter and Jaylin Golson finsished 10th in a time of 3:12.23.
