EMU Men - Seven Eagles Qualify to NCAA East Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had seven student-athletes qualify to the upcoming NCAA East Regional, May 25-27, in Lexington, Ky. In total, those Eagles will be competing in eight events throughout the three-day meet.
In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, an individual must be among the top 48 declared student-athletes in their respective events. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams are accepted into the competition.
Competing for the Eagles at the NCAA East Regional are junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio - Hudson), redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), redshirt juniors Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) and Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio - Bishop Hartley), redshirt Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky), and sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. - Parkland).
This marks the fourth time that Fink will compete in the meet, while it is the second appearance for Andresson and Ziegenfuss. Additionally, it will be the first time that Antonio, Bouchikhi, Hart, and Jones will compete at the regional.
Antonio, in his first season donning the Green and White, snuck into the NCAA East Regional in the 200m dash. Antonio's time of 21.00 seconds from the MAC Outdoor Championships secured him the No. 40 seed in the East.
Fink leads a pair of runners who qualified to the meet in the 3000m steeplechase. The Maumee, Ohio native enters as the No. 6 seed after posting a time of 8:44.84 at the Mt. SAC Relays. Joining Fink in the 3000m steeplechase will be Andresson. Andresson enters the regional meet seeded 28th in the 3000m steeplechase after clocking in at 8:56.54 at the MAC Outdoor Championships.
A third distance runner will join Fink and Andresson, as Bouchikhi earned a spot in the 5000m. Bouchikhi qualified 35th with a season-best time of 14:06.12.
Hart qualified in an impressive pair of events. In both the high jump and the long jump, Hart is seeded 45th. The sophomore's season-best high jump of 2.08 meters/ 6 feet 9.75-inches came at the Penn Relays, while his best long jump of 7.45 meters/ 24 feet 5.5-inches came at the MAC Championships.
Jones will take part in the hammer throw, jumping to the 40th-best spot after posting a season-best launch of 62.00 meters/ 203 feet 5-inches at the conference championships last week.
Also attending the NCAA East Regional will be Ziegenfuss in the javelin. Ziegenfuss broke both the program and the conference record last week at the MAC Championships, launching 68.89 meters/ 226 feet to defend his conference title. Specifically, the Allentown, Pa. native holds the No. 19 seed heading into the meet.
