Calvin Men's Track and Field Team Captures Calvin Tune-Up Invitational Title

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team claimed the title of its own Calvin Tune-Up Invitational, posting a final team score of 127 points.



Calvin claimed first place in a trio of events on Saturday with junior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) leading the way with a win in the 200 meters in a season-best time of 22.05. Valentine was part of a 1-4 Calvin finish in the race as junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth in a season-best time of 22.33.



Sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) won the long jump with a leap of 21-3. Freshman Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was fourth (20-3 1/4) and senior Reitsma Mpindi (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) eighth (19-5 1/2).



In the 800 meters, senior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS) cruised to first place in a career-best time of 1:55.43. Junior Hendrik VerMeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Seconday School) was sixth (1:57.88) while senior Maxwell Vruwink (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was eighth (1:58.33).



In the 400 meters, sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was second (49.98).



Reitsma Mpindi was sixth in the 100 meter dash in a season-best time of 11.28.



In the 110 high hurdles, junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) was third (15.27), junior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) fifth (15.80) and sophomore Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) sixth (15.85).



In the 400 meter hurdles, freshman Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) turned in a career-best time of 55.87 that was good for second place.



Calvin'x 4x100 meter relay team of Rohrer, Barents, Jeremiah Stout and freshman Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) was fifth in 45.87.



Sophomore Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth in the discus with a season-best throw of 151-5. He also tossed a season-best throw of 46-2 3/4 to place ninth in the shot put.



In the triple jump, freshman Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Christian Academy) was fifth (36-9 3/4).



In the pole vault, junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was second in the pole vault (13-11 1/4) while junior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) was fifth (12-11 1/2).



Calvin will now prepare to host the MIAA Track and Field Championships May 4 and 5.
