The Grand Valley State track & field teams took part in four different meets over the weekend as the squad traveled to the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., the Golden Grizzly Invite hosted by Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., and the David Suenram Gorilla Classic hosted by Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Ks.
At the Bison Outdoor Classic, the Lakers were led by performances from Brady Selner in the 5000m, Madison Goen in the 5000m, Kelly Haubert in the 10000m, and Tyler Walters in the 800m. Selner put up a time of 14:16.27 in the 5000m which was good for second place. Goen provided a time of 17:15.14 and placed first in the 5000m. Haubert placed third in the 10000m with a time of 34:58.98. Walters placed sixth in the 800m with a time of 1:52.50.
The Laker pole vaulters competed at the David Suenram Gorilla Classic and placed four individuals in the top 10 on the men's and women's side. Skylar Schoen and Lucy Buckholz tied for seventh on the women's side with a height of 3.67m (12' 0 1/2"), while Nate Fasbender placed ninth on the men's side with a height of 4.78m (15' 8 1/4") and Jacob Battani placed tenth with a height of 4.78m (15' 8 1/4").
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Lakers were led by performances from Kathryn Mills in the High Jump, Alexis Duncan in the Long Jump, Rachael Walters in the 800m and Samora Nesbitt in the Triple Jump. Mills placed sixth in the High Jump with a height of 1.68m (5' 6"). Duncan was able to place seventh in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.88m (19' 3 1/2"). Walters placed 11th in the 800m with a time of 2:08.87. Nesbitt placed fourth in the Triple Jump with a distance of 15.67m (51' 5").
At the Golden Grizzly Invite, the Lakers were led by performances from Tiara Wiggins, Breanna Luba, Angela Ritter, Jessica O'Connell, Skylar Dantzler, Samantha Saikalis, Mary Hecksel, Gary Hickman, Jaylin Golson, Thomas Capers, Tyler Pavliga, the women's 4x100m relay team, and the men's 4x100m relay team. Wiggins placed first in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.88. Luba was able to place second in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.00. Ritter placed second in both the 400m (55.36) and the 100m (11.93). O'Connell placed first in the 400m Hurdles with a time of 1:01.41. Dantzler provided a first place finish in the 200m with a time of 24.79. Saikalis placed first in the high jump with a height of 1.65m (5' 5"). Hecksel provided a first place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 47.08m (154' 5").
Hickman was able to place first in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.28. Golson placed first in the 400m, recording a time of 48.21 while Capers placed second in the event at 48.94. Pavliga came in first in the 400m Hurdles at 54.07. The women's 4x100m relay team of Luba, Chant'e Roberts, Sarah Beulla, and Ritter placed first with a time of 46.51, while the men's 4x100m relay team of Kenny Jones, Golson, Capers, and Emmanuel Arop placed first with a time of 41.16.
The Lakers continue their outdoor season on Friday and Saturday in their first home meet of the year when they host the Al Owens Classic.
