YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will be competing in the European Indoor Track & Field Championships beginning tomorrow, March 3, in Belgrade, Serbia.
"On behalf of the team, our alumni, and Eastern Michigan University, we are thrilled that Hlynur has developed to such a level that he will be representing Iceland in the European Championships," exclaimed Head Coach John Goodridge. "For an athlete with a very modest high school best of 4:36 for 1600 meters, he joins a long list of EMU athletes over the years who have developed dramatically throughout their career in Ypsilanti."
Andresson will be representing his native country of Iceland at the event, competing in the 3000m against some of Europe's best. The distance runner broke a pair of Icelandic records this indoor season. At the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 10, the redshirt junior clocked in with a career-best time of 4:05.78, breaking the record and setting a new personal-best. Additionally, he also broke the 3000m record, crossing the finish line in 8:06.69 at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 4.
Most recently, Andresson claimed a pair of runner-up finishes at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25. The Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland native helped EMU to silver in the distance medley relay, while also taking second in the mile with a time of 4:09.43.
The meet can be viewed live on EuroSport throughout the three days of competition. Action from Belgrade is scheduled to begin tomorrow, March 3, with Andresson's 3000m race slated to start at 12:25 a.m. ET early Saturday morning.
