NORTHVILLE, Mich. (9/10/2016) -- Junior Sydnie Fetherolf led three Titan runners who set personal records on the day as the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team claimed third place in the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, held at Cass Benton Park in Northville on Saturday.
As a team, Detroit Mercy totaled 90 points, behind only Bucknell (23) and Eastern Michigan (57) in the 5k race.
Fetherolf posted her PR of 18:36 to finish in fifth place, her first-ever collegiate 5k that she has run under 19 minutes.
Senior Devon Sutton clocked a career-low 18:52 to place 11th, while junior Jenny Ponkowski shaved three seconds off her career time to take 24th in 19:33.
The longest running Titan tradition featured men's and women's open 5k races, which included over 40 high schools, a boy's and girl's 1.5-mile middle school race and the Tommy Titan Kid's race as children nine and under raced against the lovable Titan mascot for 200-meters.
Detroit Mercy will get right back on the course as it competes in another long cross country tradition in Notre Dame's National Catholic Championships, set for Friday, Sept. 15.
Here is how the action went down at the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invite:
With rain throughout the night, the course was slick and muddy in certain spots.
Junior Sydnie Fetherolf was in the front pack the entire race and her time of 18:36 was good for fifth. Her previous career 5k time was 19:01 at last year's event, where she finished sixth.
Her 18:36 time is the fourth fastest by a Titan at Cass Benton Park behind Kim Hemstreet's 17:58 in 2002, Angie Lefere's 18:18 in 1999 and Ruthie Cook's 18:32 in 2001.
It was also her second-straight top-10 effort as she was eighth in the season opener at Oakland.
Senior Devon Sutton posted a PR by 16 seconds with her time of 18:52. Her previous mark was 19:08 on the same course last season.
Sutton now owns the 10th fastest time by a Titan at Cass Benton Park.
Junior Jenny Ponkowski ran 19:33, three seconds faster than her 5k time in 2015 at the home meet.
Junior Taylor Smith was 38th overall, and freshman Victoria Ostrander was 42nd as Detroit Mercy's top five runners were the same for the second-straight race.
The meet originated as a women's only event in 1987 with the men's race beginning in 1998. Titan alum Kevin Donner '84 – current head coach of Bucknell cross country and track and field – started the annual tradition as he was the head coach of the Titan women from 1984-92.
Titan alum Sarah Martinez '13 took part in the collegiate race as an unattached runner and was 29th in 19:49.
