Northville, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team lifted the lid on their 2016 season today, Sept. 10, at the Detroit Titan Invite in Northville, Mich. The Eagles utilized a younger lineup to build depth for later in the season, coming out with a second-place team finish after totaling 83 points.
"Hopefully, the race was a motivating and learning experience that the guys can build on," EMU Head Coach John Goodridge said.
With an inexperienced lineup earning experience early in the season, Goodridge and his squad have gotten off to a good start building depth for later in the year. Individually, redshirt freshman Austin Sargent (Cedar Spring, Mich. – Cedar Spring) made his Eagle debut, leading the team after taking 12th with a time of 21:25.8. Just six spots behind him, sophomore David Saporito (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) nabbed 18th, clocking in at 21:35.5. Rounding out the top-three Eagle finishers was fellow sophomore Morgan O'Flahrity (Madison, Wis. – Edgewood), who ran to a 20th-place finish in 21:37.1.
Behind them, junior Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J. – Hillsborough) crossed the finish line in 21:43.2 to take 22nd, while freshman Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich. – Pinckney) donned the Green and White for the first time, ultimately finishing 23rd in 21:47.5.
Next week, the Eagles will flock to East Lansing, Mich. to race in the MSU Spartan Classic, Sept. 16. This race will likely feature a more veteran-laden lineup than was seen in today's meet.
