YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After winning its first ever Mid-American Conference Championship last season, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team was selected as the top team in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, announced today, Aug. 30, by the league office.
Fresh off winning their first ever conference title, the Eagles look to continue the positive momentum into the 2016 season as the preseason favorites after amassing nine first place votes. Sitting behind EMU in second is Bowling Green with one vote, while Toledo rounds out the top three. From there, Central Michigan was tabbed fourth, and Northern Illinois was selected fifth.
Just behind the Huskies, Western Michigan sits in sixth, with Buffalo slotted behind the Broncos in seventh. Miami, Ohio, and Akron complete the top 10, while Kent State and Ball State were tabbed 11th and 12th, respectively.
Additionally, the team enters the season ranked fifth by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the Great Lakes Region behind Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin. This marks an increase of two spots in the poll since last year, as the Eagles were slated to finish seventh in the 2015 season.
Only two other MAC teams were selected in the top-15, as Central Michigan was tabbed 14th, while Toledo was one spot behind in 15th.
The Eagles open the 2016 season this Friday, Sept. 2, at the George Dales Invitational. For more information on the 2016 schedule, please click here.
