JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team got off to a solid start today, May 26, at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla. The Green and White had one student-athlete qualify to tomorrow's 400m dash quarterfinals.

Beginning the day with the hammer throw, the Eagles had a pair of participants vie for a chance to head to Oregon for the NCAA Championships. Leading the way for EMU was redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville), who finished the day with a throw of 59.64 meters/ 195 feet 8-inches to place 40th. Just behind him, redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) finished in 45th with a mark of 57.97 meters/ 190 feet 2-inches.

The 400m dash prelims saw junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio – Findlay) post his best mark of the season. Brown clocked in at 46.44 to finish fifth in his very tough heat, and 15th overall. The Findlay, Ohio native punched his ticket to tomorrow's quarterfinals after posting the second-best time outside of the top-three individuals from each heat.

The final event of the day featured a pair of Eagle distance runners taking part in the 10,000m. Leading the way for Eastern was redshirt sophomore Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge), who finished in 25th with a time of 30:32.34. Also running in the race was fellow redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason), the 41st-place finisher after clocking in at 31:24.83.

Head Coach John Goodridge described the opening day as "A bittersweet day, as this was the last day seeing Keith Williams and Jeff Elam in our tradition-filled EMU uniform, particularly as Jeff was not able to compete with his leg injured while warming up. Tyler Brown looked good, as he advanced to the 400 final after racing in the fastest preliminary. Finally, Andresson ended the day with a well executed 10,000 meter race."

Tomorrow, the Eagles will take part in three more events. The day will begin with the javelin throw at noon, after which Brown will race again at 6:15 p.m. The day will conclude with the 3000m steeplechase at 9:30 p.m.
