EMU Women - Pole Vault Leads the Eagles on Second Day in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapped up their time in Columbus, Ohio today, April 23, completing their second day at the Jesse Owens Classic. The team had a great day overall, with the Green and White taking home the pole vault title in dominating fashion.



Beginning with the 100m dash, freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) continued her impressive campaign, placing sixth with a time of 11.70. Not only was her mark a personal-best, but it also bumped her to sixth all-time in the EMU record books. Just behind Harris, senior Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind. – John Adams) crossed the finish line in 11.77 to take seventh. Harris also led the team in the 200m dash, notching another career-best with a time of 24.34, nabbing eighth-place. McKinney was just .02 behind Harris, taking ninth in 24.36. Finally, junior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. – Irvington) led the charge in the 400m dash, placing 10th in a career-best 56.99. Also posting a personal-best in the event was sophomore Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area), who took 11th with a time of 57.02.



The Eagles had six runners take part in the 800m, with sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) leading the charge by taking sixth with a time of 2:11.01. Also turning in solid races were fellow sophomores Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville), who placed 12th in 2:12.58, and Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2) in 17th with a time of 2:13.50. In the relays, Eastern turned in a top-three finish in the 4x100m, nabbing the bronze. The group of Harris, McKinney, senior Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind. – Pike), and Jones ultimately finished with a time of 46.09. In the 4x400m relay, Eastern finished 10th after crossing the finish line in 3:54.76.



Moving to the hurdles, freshman Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio – Withrow) nabbed a top-10 finish in the 100m hurdles, posting a career-best time of 14.03. Also running in the race was senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. – Case), who took 16th after crossing the finish line in 14.34. The 400m hurdles saw junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) post another top-10 finish, coming in sixth with a time of 1:01.57. Carter took part in the longer hurdles event as well, with her time coming in at 1:04.60.



The long jump saw sophomore Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) take home another medal for EMU, as she finished third with a mark of 5.67 meters/ 18 feet 7.25-inches. The team also found a lot of success in pole vault, as junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) took home the gold with a career-best mark of 4.10 meters/ 13 feet 5.25-inches. Not only was her mark a personal-best by five inches, but it also moved her to fourth in program history. Junior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) and senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio – Pandora-Gilboa) also finished within the top-10, both posting marks of 3.80 meters/ 12 feet 5.5-inches. Finally, junior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) posted a 19th-place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 47.76 meters/ 156 feet 8.5-inches.



Next week, the team will be spread out throughout three meets. The Eagles will take part in the Drake Relays, April 28-30, in Des Moines, Iowa, in addition to heading to the Gina Relays, April 28-30, in Hillsdale, Mich. Finally, the Green and White will also be represented at the Payton Jordan Invitational, May 1, in Stanford, Calif.
