ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior distance and middle-distance athlete Nate Chapman was awarded Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honors for his win and new personal-best time in the 600-meter run last weekend, the conference announced on Wednesday (Dec. 9).
The Auburn Hills, Michigan, native set a new PR in 1:19.62 last Friday (Dec. 4) at GVSU's Kelly Family Turf Building, and despite that time representing one of five personal bests hit at the meet, Chapman was the only running athlete to record a new collegiate best.
His time beat the field by more than two full seconds. The victory highlighted a weekend used by U-M for an early evaluation heading into the heavy schedule of mid-January. In conference meets, Chapman has scored in each of his three seasons as a Wolverine -- he ran in U-M's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team last winter and helped U-M to its best conference finish since 2009.
Chapman becomes the first Wolverine to earn the conference's weekly distinction since Mason Ferlic took the award two seasons ago.
The Wolverines will return to action one month from today (Saturday, Jan. 9) for the Doug Raymond Invitational in Kent, Ohio. The team will then return to Allendale, Michigan, for the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open on Jan. 15.
