CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore Joy Reist (SO/Traverse City, Mich.), represented the Golden Eagles at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday afternoon and finished with a time that was one second off her career best. The appearance by Reist was the second year CU has sent at least one individual to the national meet.
The crisp, sunny morning and the firm crushed gravel course provided ideal conditions for fast racing at McAlpine Creek Park.
As she has the previous two meets, Reist ran aggressively from the start, reaching the mile mark in 5:50. "There course gets pretty narrow in the second mile so it was very important to get out as quickly as possible," said coach Rod Wortley. "Joy did a good job of putting herself in the right place."
Over the second half of the two-loop course, Reist held form and finished one second behind her season best. Her time of 19:11 placed 124th out of 321 competitors.
