MSU - Spartan Harriers Have Solid Outing At EMU Fall Classic Friday

Dexter, Mich. - Michigan State men and women’s cross country teams had a solid outing in their final regular-season race Friday afternoon at the Eastern Michigan University Fall Classic at Hudson Mills Metro Park in Dexter, Michigan.
In their final tune up before the Big Ten Championships, the No. 19-ranked Spartan men’s team had three top-30 finishers, led by senior Austin Wissler’s 11th-place finish, covering the five kilometer course in a 15:24.9 time. Freshman Tommy Osika was 26th with a 15:54.2 clocking, just ahead of junior teammate Ed Clifton in 27th at 15:57.5.
MSU’s No. 21-ranked women’s team had five top-30 placers, paced by freshman Jessica Goethals, who covered the 5K course in 18:03.5, while fellow freshman Sarah Rustmann was 20th with a clocking of 18:18.3. That Spartan duo was followed closely behind by sophomore Brooke Kovacic in 24th (18:30.5), freshman Morgan Fleishmann in 26th (18:37.9) and junior Erin Billette in 28th (18:46.4).
Other MSU men’s finishers included junior Ryan Beyea in 32nd with 16:02.2, narrowly nipping freshman teammate Andrew O’Connor at 16:02.6 for 33rd. Sophomore Andrew Kitto rounded out the Spartan squad in 41st-place with a 16:16.6 time.
The Spartan freshmen tandem of Megan Schwartz (19:30.5) and Taylor Norris (20:10.5) were 36th and 46th, respectively, to complete the MSU women’s runners.
The men’s race was won by unattached runner Justine Kiprotich in 14:58.7, while another unattached runner, Kira Garry, won the women’s race in 17:22.4. Team scores were not kept for the meet.
Michigan State’s harriers will now prepare for the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 1, held at the Sydney Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago, Ill., hosted by Northwestern University. The action is slated to start at 11:45 a.m. (ET).
