DEXTER, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team put three in-uniform Wolverines in the top 10 at Friday's (Oct. 23) 5,000-meter EMU Classic. The season-closing event was run at the nearby Hudson Mills Metropark, where U-M has run the Michigan Open in past seasons. All seven athletes wearing the Block M were among the first 25 finishers across the line.
Head coach Mike McGuire had reason to be excited after today's meet, where several Wolverines met personal goals.
"We did a nice job today," said McGuire afterwards, "We were looking to get some people under 18 minutes, and we accomplished that with Corinne (Florie) and Gina McNamara. This was the best time for Gina on this course."
McGuire also singled out sophomore/freshman Ellie Leonard, fifth-year senior Laura Addison, senior Olivia Brackett and unattached winner Kira Garry as having noteworthy performances in today's race. He was also pleased with the finishes from sophomore/freshman Holly Petrusson and freshman Rebecca Deitch.
McGuire knows the value of a meet like today's in setting up athletes for a crack at the postseason lineup in 2016, not to mention a successful winter and spring on the track.
"This meet has been a stepping stone to having the chance of moving up to the Big Ten squad one year later," McGuire explained, "We just want to keep people healthy and move forward, and I felt we did a pretty good job of that today."
Junior/sophomore Corinne Florie was the first Wolverine across the line today, clocking 17:41.6 and shaving more than 26 seconds from her season-opening 5K time to finish sixth overall.
"I felt pretty excited to come out today," said Florie, "It's a nice fall day out here with my team, and I just wanted to go race hard and have some fun."
She was a few seconds ahead of senior/junior Gina McNamara, whose lifetime best at the Hudson Mills Metropark (17:48.7) was just enough to edge out Addison (17:48.9) for eighth place, leaving the fifth-year senior in ninth.
That rounded out the three U-M athletes in the top 10, but another trio cracked the top 15. Leonard took 11th place, while Brackett earned a 12th-place showing, and Petrusson crossed 14th. Sophomore/freshman Sydney Badger took 22nd place in 18:26.6.
After a grueling fall season, Florie and others in Maize and Blue are seeing the benefits of hard training.
"Everyone is coming back and seeing how all of the time, effort and hard work is paying off," she said, "I feel like now I am a lot more fit and a lot stronger, and that's what you want to see this time of year."
The outlook remains positive with McGuire, as well. With the postseason around the corner, he has the team's focus centered squarely on the conference championships.
"We have a couple more key workouts between now and going to Chicago so it's just a matter of staying focused on the task at hand," McGuire said.
U-M begins its postseason run next weekend with the Big Ten Championships on Sunday (Nov. 1) at 10:45 a.m. CST in Evanston, Illinois.
