MSU - O’Connor Advances At USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships

EUGENE, Oregon - Former Michigan State track & field All-American Leah O’Connor qualified for the finals of the 3,000m steeplechase at the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a fourth-place finish in the preliminary round Thursday in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field.

O’Connor finished second in her heat with a time of 9:41.16 behind Stephanie Garcia who finished with a time of 9:37.44. Overall, she finished fourth to automatically qualify for Saturday’s final. O’Connor most recently finished third in the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase with a school-record time of 9:33.38 on June 13. O’Connor was the NCAA champion in the 3,000m steeplechase in 2014.
Hundreds of athletes will compete to make Team USA and earn a spot to compete in the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China this August.
Fellow MSU All-American Antonio James was also in action on Thursday in the discus. The Big Ten discus champion finished 18th with a mark of 57.01m (187-0).
Several other Spartans will be in action later this week. Seven-time All-American Tori Franklin will be in action in the triple jump on Saturday, June 27. Franklin finished her Spartan career ending fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.38m at the NCAA Championship.
Current Spartan Katelyn Daniels, who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, will compete in the discus on Saturday. Daniels captured the Big Ten title in discus, posting a throw of 59.06 meters. The distance was also a meet record for the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
