UDM - Titans Earn Pair of Wins at GVSU Tune-Up on Friday

ALLENDALE, Mich. (2/20/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field squad earned two victories Friday in its final regular-season indoor meet prior to the 2015 Horizon League Indoor Championships. Detroit competed at the individual-only GVSU Tune-Up on the campus of Grand Valley State University.



Sophomore distance runner Ryan Leahy earned his third individual victory of the indoor season, winning the 5,000 meter run on Friday. Leahy won the 22-member race in 15:14.60, which was the winning time by a little more than five seconds.



Detroit also took first place in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Colton Wirgau, Ilia Panev, Joshua Carolin and Zach Arnold earned a time of 3:25.26 to win by more than one second over second place Ferris State.



Three Titans placed in the top four in the 1-mile run. Freshman Charlie Felton took second in a time of 4:17.60, marking his third top-five finish in the event this season. Junior Austin Wigent followed in third at 4:19.06, while freshman Ben Kendell lowered his PR in the mile with a time of 4:19.49 to finish in fourth place. Senior Ylli Alla crossed in 4:30.05, while freshman Miles Kelleher earned a PR with his time of 4:35.68 as well in the mile run.



Senior George Holman smashed his PR in the 3,000 meters, finishing ninth overall with a time of 8:43.56. He topped his previous PR by nearly 12 seconds in the event.



Carolin finished fifth in the 800 meter run with a season-best time of 1:56.50. Freshman Max Rogowski placed 12th with a time of 1:59.85 in the 800 meters. Panev reached the 60 meter hurdle finals and finished seventh with a time of 8.56 after qualifying with a time of 8.66 in preliminaries.



Wirgau and freshman Zach Arnold placed eighth and ninth place, respectively, in the 400 meter dash. Wirgau had a time of 51.18, while Arnold was just behind at 51.63. Sophomore Zach Sand had a time of 24.62 in the 200 meter dash as the lone representative for the Titans.



The Titans next head to the Horizon League Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1 at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio.
