Hillsdale - Mirth Qualifies for Cross Country Nationals
Provided by Hillsdale
The Hillsdale College men's cross country team ran a strong race at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Meet, taking sixth place as a team.
The Chargers, although having a strong season, spending time ranked 11th in the nation, will not qualify for the NCAA Division II National Meet and thus end the season as only the top four team finishes are given births.
The race was extended to a 10K rather than the 8K in which the Chargers generally competed during the regular season. Despite this change, the Chargers were able to deliver strong times, especially the core of seniors (Joshua Mirth, Luke Hickman and John Butler) that have led the team in the regular season.
Individually, Mirth finished third out of nearly 200 athletes. He finished with a time of 30:32.8, only 8 seconds behind the 1st place finisher, Tyler Pence, a senior from Southern Indiana University.
Although the team did not qualify for nationals, Mirth will receive a bid as he had the best time out of the individuals that did not qualify with their teams.
Hickman also ran a strong race, taking 16th with a time of 31:11.6. Butler followed shortly behind, finishing 20th with a time of 31:24.9.
Sophomores Joseph Newcomb and Caleb Gatchell will end their seasons positively, crossing the finish line with times of 32:42.9 and 32:52.1 respectively.
Freshman Anthony Wondaal completed his first season and ran a time of 33:02.1.
Mirth will be headed to Louisville, Kentucky on Dec. 6 to participate in the national championship meet.
