ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore/freshman Jaimie Phelan of the fourth-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Co-Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 28).

Phelan earned the honor after a runner-up finish at the EMU Fall Classic last Friday (Oct. 24). The non-scoring, 5K race featured a field of 115 runners, and Phelan's time of 17:39.9 paced the Wolverines in the event.

This event marks the first time Phelan has led the Maize and Blue in competition, and she did so in decisive fashion, beating the rest of the field by nearly 10 seconds. It also marks a vast improvement over her time at the 5,000-meter Michigan Open -- run at the same course in nearby Dexter -- from 2013 (18:42.83).

This week's recognition gives U-M its fourth Big Ten Athlete of the Week award this season. The previous honors came from Shannon Osika (Sept. 2) and Erin Finn (Sept. 23; Sept. 30).

U-M will begin its championship season this weekend with the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. The event is slated for 10:45 a.m. CST on Sunday (Nov. 2) at Iowa's Ashton Cross Country Course.
