ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the 20th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 23).
Ferlic earned the honor after taking the individual title among a field of 42 runners at last weekend's 8K Big Ten Preview event with a time of 24:31.63. He led the way for the Wolverines, who placed four runners in the top five, to a team victory with 19 points at the event.
This week's honors mark the third time in Ferlic's career that he has been named as the conference's athlete of the week. Last season, he earned the recognition on Oct. 22 after helping an unranked U-M squad finish ninth at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational. As a sophomore, he collected his first conference award (Sept. 25) for helping lead the Maize and Blue to a sixth-place finish at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational.
The Wolverines will take one week off before returning to action next weekend with the Blue and Gold Invitational on Friday, Oct. 3.
