GVSU Lakers Cross Country Runs Well at Spartan Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 2014 cross country season is officially underway for Grand Valley State, as the Lakers put on a good showing in both the men's and women's races at the Spartan Invite on Friday afternoon. The women's team placed four runners in the Top 15 of the 6k race, while GVSU had 10 runners finish in the Top 30 of the 8k race.



Being held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State, it was sophomore Kendra Foley who crossed the finish line first for the Lakers in fifth place with a time of 21:25. Junior Jessica Janecke finished closely behind the sophomore, coming in sixth with a time of 21:31. Senior Allyson Winchester was the next runner from Grand Valley to finish in the race, placing 11th with a time of 21:50, while Hannah Osborn placed 15th at 22:01.



The next finisher from Grand Valley State was junior Jordan Chester, crossing the finish line at 22:42 to place 42nd, making her the last attached Laker runner to place in the Top 50.



Other GVSU runners who placed for the women's team were Kelly Haubert in 60th (23:15), Jenna Klynstra in 68th (23:24), Alex McBride in 80th (23:35), Taylor Smith in 83rd (23:40), Sarah Cullip in 97th (24:01) and Rachel Bendewald in 123rd (24:31) to round out the placing Laker women runners.



Senior Alan Peterson finished in fourth (24:41) to lead the Laker men in East Lansing, while junior Chad Cini crossed the line at 24:56 to place 13th. Following up the two returning All-Americans were John Luterbach and Bradt Selner both finishing at 25:12 to tie for 18th, Kyle Flores and Nate Ordoff tying for 21st at 25:14, Bryce Bradley coming in just .01 seconds behind them to place 23rd. Spencer Pageau (25:18), Torben Hoffmeyer (25:21), and Wuoi Mach (25:23) finished in 25th, 26th, and 27th respectively to round out the attached GVSU runners in the Top 30.



Freshman Trevor Sharnas (25:33) was the next highest Laker runner in 39th, and he was followed by Michael Matusiak (25:46) in 53rd, Mark List (25:46) in 54th, Mitchell Wilkins (25:47) in 55th, and Peter Tomkiewicz (25:48) in 57th. Following up those runners were Joe Duff (26:01) and Josh Steible (26:02) in 68th and 69th, respectively, Grant Truskowski (26:09) in 74th, Mitchell Tiethof (26:22) in 88th, and Mowgli Crosby (26:34) in 96th. Ethan Barnes (26:42) at 110th, Greg Madendorp (27:03) in 138th, and David Powell (27:05) in 140th rounded out the runners who were attached to GVSU.



GVSU won't be hitting the trails until Sept. 27 when they travel to Minneapolis to compete in the 2014 Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis, at 1:20 p.m.
