THREE RIVERS, Mich. -- Freshman Maria McDaniel continued her hot start to the 2014 cross country season after taking second place but Western Michigan fell to Eastern Michigan at its annual George Dales Invitational at Pine View Golf Club Friday evening.
McDaniel finished her first 6k of the season with a time of 21:20, but EMU placed seven runners in the top 10 and Victoria Voronko won her fourth George Dales Invitational. The Eagles edged the Broncos 22-37 to win their fifth-straight GDI.
"Our times were considerably faster than what we ran last year," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "I was pleased with the way we competed and thought we got ourselves in good position in the first mile but we still have some work to do."
WMU's Ann Marie Arseneau took fifth overall with a time of 22:00 and freshman Hanne Christensen took seventh overall with a time of 22:30. Other scorers for the Broncos were Amy Littlefield with a time of 23:09, Becca Peacock at 23:20, Daya Wagh at 23:37 and Raychel Figurski at 23:57.
The Broncos have a bye week before heading to the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 27 at the University of Minneapolis.
