WMU - Cross Country Opens 2014 With Win at Crusader Classic

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Freshman Maria McDaniel took first overall in her first collegiate race and the Western Michigan cross country team was crowned Crusader Classic Invitational champions on Friday evening.
McDaniel turned in a time of 13:00 flat for the 4k race, which was shortened from 6k due to the weather concerns, to claim her first career win. Overall the Broncos had three runners in the top 10 to score 34 points. IUPUI took second with 38 points and hosts Valparaiso took third with 61.
"We looked very strong throughout the race," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "I thought we put ourselves in very good position early on and we raced very well. It is definitely a start in the right direction.
Ann Marie Arseneau took third overall with a time of 13:24.3 as WMU's second finisher, while freshman Hanne Christensen took ninth overall at 13:56.5. Amy Littlefield, 11th, and Daya Wagh, 20th, rounded out the Broncos' top five.
Western Michigan heads back to Kalamazoo for the annual George Dales Invitational on Friday, Sept. 12 at Pine View Golf Club in Three Rivers, Mich.
