NEW ORLEANS – Grand Valley State's Allyson Winchester and Jessica Janecke were named as two of the top five returning women's cross country runners in Division II in a recent 2014 preview by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Originally from Wayland, Michigan, Winchester was named the other top returning senior by USTFCCCA contributioner Kyle Terwillegar after finishing a spectacular 2013 season along with Lauren Martin of Adams State. Winchester received USTFCCCA All-American honors for the third time in as many seasons after a third-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championships in Spokane, Wash. The senior runner also named a USTFCCCA All-Midwest Region honoree after a sixth-place finish at the Midwest Regional meet and a First Team All-GLIAC member after placing first at the GLIAC Championship.
Terwillegar named Janecke, a junior from Scales Mound, Illinois, their fifth-best returning women's cross country runner in Division II. A sophomore in 2013, Janecke is a reigning two-time All-American after a fourth place finish in 2012 and a ninth-place finish in 2013 at the National Championship meets. Janecke also received All-Region honors after a second-place finish at the Midwest Regional meet as well as First Team All-GLIAC honors after placing third at the GLIAC Championships. The junior runner was also a USTFCCCA Academic All-American in 2013, finishing the Fall semester with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
Also making an appearance on the watch list was senior Hannah Osborn. From Fort Wayne, Indiana, Osborn enters her senior season as a two-time USTFCCCA All-American in 2012 and 2013. Osborn was also a Second Team All-GLIAC selection in 2013 and was an All-Region honoree in 2012.
The Laker women are looking to win their third consecutive NCAA Division II championship when they begin their season on September 12 at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing.
