OREGON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's cross country team started off the 2014 campaign with a bang, winning the Toledo Home Opener by a margin of 37 points, Aug. 29. The Green and White amassed 16 points, with seven Eagles placing in the top-10 to edge out Mid-American Conference opponents the University of Toledo (53) and Bowling Green State University (71).
Improving on a 1-2-3 finish from last year's season opener, the Eagles claimed the first four finishes in the evening's meet. The quartet of Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason), Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio-River View (Wingate)), Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline), and Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) paced the field throughout the entirety of the race. Raymond and Hammond pulled ahead during the final kilometer to finish first and second, respectively, with less than three seconds between them. Raymond clocked a 15:28.40, while Hammond ran a time of 15:31.30 in his first race donning the Green and White. Trinh followed shortly after in 15:39.60, while Flores used his debut in an Eagle uniform to record a mark of 15:47.60.
The team saw a flurry of freshman finish in the next five positions, led by Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J.-Hillsborough) in 16:04.60 for sixth place. John Sattler (Byron Center, Mich.-Byron Center) battled it out with BGSU's Nathan Kuck in the final meters leading up to the finish line with both notching times of 16:07.1, but Kuck's kick had the edge on Sattler when reviewed to the hundredth of a second, resulting in an eighth-place finish for the EMU harrier. Coming in ninth was Cody Brizzolara (Maine, N.Y.-Maine-Endwell) at 16:15.30.
"I'm very pleased with today's lineup for our first meet," noted Head Coach John Goodridge. "We gave it a very smart, controlled effort. The guys took control of the race at an appropriate time, and it looked really good for the entire distance. We had quite a few freshman running in the Eastern uniform for the first time, and they looked solid."
The Green and White will run next weekend in the Detroit Titan Invitational, hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy. Goodridge was able to comment on next week's competition, stating, "I haven't made a definite decision yet for next week, but it is likely that I will have the same lineup put the uniform on again to gain collegiate experience." Whatever lineup the 14th-year Head Coach chooses, it will be an entertaining one to watch for any fans who wish to watch a meet close to home. The Eagles will run at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Cass Benton Park in Northville, Mich.
