JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team finished up its second day at the NCAA East Regional, May 30. At the conclusion of the five events in which the Eagles competed, the Green and White came away with one athlete performing well enough to move on to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
The morning started out with the hammer throw, in which EMU record holder Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) threw for the second-best distance of his career at 58.55 meters/192 feet 1-inch. Williams competed in a strong field, which included Mid-American Conference Champion Matthias Tayala of Kent State in a runner-up finish.
With the onset of rain, events were delayed one hour until the weather was more suited for competition. At 6 p.m., two Eagles competed for their chance to advance to the next stage of the NCAA Championships. MAC Champion Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) leapt 16.01 meters/52 feet 6.50-inches in the triple jump to earn a spot amongst the nation's elite athletes in Eugene in two weeks. On the track, Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) finished seventh in his heat, taking 39th overall in 14.32 seconds.
Events continued to eliminate Eagles from advancing throughout the final two events for the squad, as Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) crossed the line in the 400m hurdles in 52.62, while Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) and Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt) finished the preliminary heats of the 200m dash in 21.16 and 21.58, respectively.
The trio of Bolton, Elam, and (Chris) Scott have not yet completed their run at the NCAA East Regional, as they make up three-fourths of the EMU record-breaking 4x100m relay team that will fight for the chance to go to Eugene tomorrow at 6 p.m. along with Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay). To conclude the regional meet at 9:25 p.m., Bolton, Brown, and Elam will join up with Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford) for the 4x400m relay. Also competing for the Green and White on the final day of competition will be Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) in the 1500m at 6:30 p.m. and Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville) in the pole vault at noon, as the two seniors will aim to qualify for the NCAA Championships to cap off their EMU careers. The Eagles will see three more athletes represented, both on the track and field. At 5 p.m., Aaron Benton (Dryden, Mich.-Almont) will compete in the high jump, while the duo of Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) and Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) are slated to run the 5000m at 8:05 p.m. Live results for all events will be available through flashresults.com.
