DETROIT (5/29/2014) -- Senior Eric Lewis and junior Colin Cashner from the University of Detroit Mercy men's outdoor track and field team will compete in the men's hammer throw at the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round in the East Region on Friday in Jacksonville, Florida on the campus of the University of North Florida.

For Lewis, it will be his second time competing in the preliminary round after reaching the mark in 2012. Cashner will be participating for the first time in his career.

Lewis currently sits 26th in the East Region with a UDM record-breaking throw of 62.38m/204-8 that he had back in April at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell. Cashner is 45th with a throw of 59.89m/196-6 he had during the Horizon League Outdoor Championships the first weekend of May at Youngstown State.

The top 48 athletes in each event (not multi-athletes or relay teams) in the East Region are declared to compete in the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round. The top 12 overall in the East and West Regions following the Preliminary Round then move on to the NCAA Championship to be June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon to be hosted by Oregon. The top 24 multi-athletes and relay teams prior to the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round advance automatically to Eugene to compete.

The 12th top mark in the men's hammer throw in the 2013 NCAA Championship Preliminary Round in the East Region went a distance of 61.27m/201-0. That specific throw came from Sam Bombaugh of Louisville who was topped by UDM's Lewis at the Louisville Twilight earlier this year on May 16. Bombaugh enters the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round ranked 19th in the East Region with a throw of 62.96m/206-6.
