Record confirmation will mean athlete will take advantage of half of $5,000 bonus

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (May 10, 2014) – Cool, sunny weather and a light breeze were factors that only helped Christo Landry (28) from Ann Arbor, MI unofficially tie the 25K American record (1:14:18) set by Muhamed Trafeh (27) at the 2013 Fifth Third River Bank Run.

“United States Track & Field is already working to confirm Christo’s co-record holder status,” says Greg Meyer, elite athlete recruiter and 7-time 25K champion. “Once confirmed, Christo will earn an additional $2,500 which is half of the $5,000 bonus for setting a new 25K American record on the course. We are now looking forward to the 2015 Fifth Third River Bank Run on Saturday, May 9 when we hope to see both Christo and Muhamed return to Grand Rapids to break the tie!”

First across the finish line on Saturday was international athlete, Samson Gebreyohannes Gezahai (22) of Eritrea (1:14:07), winning the $5,000 Fifth Third River Bank Run Open division first place purse. Along with a potential tie to the current 25K American record, Christo Landry finished second in the Open division ($1,500) and first in the USA 25 km Open Championship ($7,000), and could win as much as $11,000 with the partial bonus.

On the women’s side, Kellyn Johnson-Taylor (27) from Flagstaff, AZ took first place (1:25:25) in the Fifth Third River Bank Run Open division and USA 25 km Open Championship, followed closely by Dot McMahan from Rochester, MI who took second place in the Open division and the USA 25 km Open Championship with a time of 1:27:17.

Overall participation numbers reflected the rough Michigan winter and spring, and were down in everything but the 25K compared to 2013, from 21,228 to 18,478. Totals for each event as compared to 2013 are as follows: Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K and USA 25 km Open Championship-6,717/6,614; Fifth Third 10K-4,209/4,790; Fifth Third 5K Run-4,470/5,960; Fifth Third 5K Community Walk-2015/2,466; and Fifth Third Junior on Wednesday, May 7-881/1,398.
