TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team finished its final regular season meet of the 2014 campaign when it sent a small group to the Toledo Invitational on Friday, May 9.
Sophomore Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) picked up the only win for the Green and White, claiming a victory in the 400m hurdles in 52.92 seconds. Finishing shortly behind Elam in the event was Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior), who took third in 56.60 seconds. Lindsey also picked up another third-place finish in the 110m hurdles, crossing the line at 14.78.
In the 400m dash, the Eagles took the second and third spots thanks to Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Farmington) and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford). The duo recorded marks of 48.37 and 48.49, respectively, which are both Mid-American Conference meet qualifying standards. Taking fifth in the 400m was Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) in 50.32.
The Green and White put two more runners on the track for the day, as Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales) took fifth in the 100m dash in 11.10 seconds and Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) was not far off his personal-best in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 10:16.15.
Four throwing events marked the conclusion of the meet for the Eagles, with Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) claiming the highest finish after taking third in the javelin throw with a mark of 48.88 meters/160 feet 4-inches. Waldron also competed in the shot put and discus throw, which was fielded by throw specialists and multi-eventers alike for the Green and White. Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) led in both events, taking fifth in the shot put with a throw of 15.77 meters/51 feet 9-inches and ninth in the discus throw at 45.35 meters/148 feet 9-inches. The discus throw resulted in a pair of personal-best marks from Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley) and Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community). Levering recorded a distance of 43.24 meters/141 feet 10-inches, while Selvig notched his personal record at 37.97 meters/124 feet 7-inches.
Though not personal records, Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) and Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) both had marks in the hammer throw that fall under the MAC's qualification standards for the event. Williams paced the team with a throw of 56.53 meters/185 feet 5-inches for fifth, while Jones took seventh with a 54.01-meter 177-foot 2-inch launch.
The Eagles will have less than a week before the start of the 2014 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 15-17.
