UDM - Baydoun Claims Steeplechase Win at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. (4/26/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's outdoor track and field team competed in the final tune-up before the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend. The Titans were competing at the Hillsdale Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the UDM throwers were at the Highlander Invitational in Radford, Va.



At Hillsdale, Zeynab Baydoun won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:24.71 topping a field of 18. The mark was just off her personal best of 11:21.55 and is currently the fourth-best time in the event in the Horizon League's outdoor season. Sara Taylor also competed and set a new PR at 11:39.37.



Aisha Potts-Tyre had a time of 15.05 in the 100 meter hurdles, just missing her PR by .01, was third overall in a group of 30 and Natalie Peterson's run of 15.48 in the same event moved her into the No. 7 all-time Titan Top 10 list and an eighth place finish. Peterson was also 13th in the 400 meter hurdles timing in at 1:07.33 in a field of 36. Samantha Zakalowski was also in the 400H running the event in 1:08.59 and finishing 17th overall.



Louisa Coppola became the second Titan to break the 17-minute mark in the 5000 meter distance race. Coppola's time of 16:49.88 was a new personal best and just off Kim Hemstreet's time of 16:48.03 and top Titan mark from 2002.



Alani Letang ran the 400 meter dash with a personal best of 57.77 while Shannon Marchant ran the event in 58.11 as the two finished eighth and ninth respectively. The two are also owners of the fourth and fifth-best current marks in the league heading into the outdoor championships.



Whitney Rogers had a jump of 11.95 in the triple jump to finish second amongst 26 other competitors.



The 4x100 meter relay team of Jayona Dent, Jasmine Greene, Brandee Hart, and Allison Garner came in fourth of 17 with a season-best time of 47.55.



The 4x400 meter relay team of Brandee Hart, Letang, Marchant, and Greene topped a field of 14 with a run of 3:54.40.



Greene also had a time of 1:03.12 in the 400 meter hurdles to finish fifth overall, just off her PR by .01.



Hart was seventh in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.57 and currently sits third in the league in that event.



Allison Garner was seventh in the 100 meter dash with a mark of 12.24.



At the Highlander Invitational, Detroit Titans Assistant Track and Field Coach Brian Richotte returned to his alma mater with the Titan throwers. Ashley Bussing was the top collegian in the shot put with a mark of 13.10m finishing second of 19 while her mark is currently the third-best in the league to date. Lauren Berlin was also on target establishing a new season-best with a distance of 11.78m. Allyson Koglin was third in the hammer throw with a season-best of 49.90m and her toss was the third-best in the Horizon League this year.



The Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be up next for the Titans and that competition will be in Youngstown, Ohio May 2-4 and hosted by Youngstown State.
