WALNUT, Calif. -- Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic' (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) third-place finish in the Olympic Development Elite 5,000-meter run headlined the final day of the Mt. SAC Relays for the University of Michigan men's track and field team on Friday (April 18) at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
In Ferlic's collegiate outdoor debut at 5,000 meters, he stopped the clock at 13:55.12 -- less than three seconds off Daniel Herrera (unattached), who won the race in 13:52.33. Senior/junior Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) also competed in the Olympic Development 5,000-meter run, finishing 12th in a time of 14:00.77.
Sophomore/freshman Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Central) represented the Maize and Blue in the Open B 5,000-meter run, finishing his first collegiate outdoor race in 14:49.69, good enough to take 26th place.
In Michigan's first event of the day, senior Herman Washington (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) finished ninth in the open 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.22. Senior Erick Gavin (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) joined Washington in the high hurdles, clocking a time of 15.09, to take 45th.
Sophomore/freshman Chris Maye (Union City, Mich./Union City) and junior/sophomore Codie Nolan (Morenci, Mich./Adrian) secured the 55th and 59th spots in the open 100-meter dash in times of 10.79 and 10.81, respectively. Nolan's time was a new personal best by .01 second.
Fifth-year senior Troy Sneller (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) and senior/junior Michael Parker Jr. (Jackson, Mich./Michigan Center) wrapped up competition for U-M's sprinters and hurdlers, running the 400-meter hurdles. Sneller took 41st in a time of 54.33, while Parker placed 47th at 54.91.
Senior/junior James Yau (Troy, Mich./Troy) and sophomore/freshman George Kelly (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) competed in their second collegiate 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing back-to-back in the Olympic development elite section. Yau crossed the line first in 10th place in a time of 9:05.31, while Kelly followed in the 11th spot at 9:06.75.
Michigan will be in action at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif., and the Kentucky Relays in Lexington, Ky., tomorrow (Saturday, April 19) to conclude the week of split competition.
