BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State senior pole vaulter Kristen Hixson has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced recently by the league office.
Hixson is the third Laker in a row to earn either the track or field athlete of the week honor, joining Jessica Janecke (Apr. 2) and Kalena Franklin (Apr. 9) who both earned track athlete of the week awards earlier this month.
Hixson broke her own school record in the pole vault over the weekend at the Hilltopper Relays in Bowling Green, Ky., clearing a height of 4.23 meters (13'10.5"). Her mark is currently the best in NCAA Division II by 7.5 inches over teammate Jennifer Schornak.
The Lakers will be competing in a variety of meets this weekend, with student-athletes traveling to the Mt. SAC Relays (Apr. 17-19) and Beach Invite (Apr. 19), while also hosting the Al Owens Classic (Apr. 18-19) at the Laker Track & Field Stadium.
Malone's Tina Oprean was named the GLIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
