CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Senior track and field team member Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference Wednesday, April 16. The award is the second of his career and the second time during the 2014 campaign that an Eagle has earned the accolade, as Mason Waynes was given the distinction on March 5.
The MAC Scholar Athlete Award is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The senior harrier, who holds a 3.74 GPA in business, came away from the Tennessee Relays with two victories under his belt, April 10-11 in Knoxville, Tenn. Kalinowski ran a personal-bet 3:45.33 in a clear victory in the 1500m run to claim the top spot in MAC standings. As of April 16, he holds the top spot in the conference by a margin of nearly four seconds, and he also holds the 16th-fastest time in the NCAA East Region. He then ran the third leg of the distance medley relay, which claimed a victory in 9:55.11, finishing over two seconds ahead of host school Tennessee.
Kalinowski will head to Walnut, Calif. to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, April 18, along with rookie standout Tyler Brown. Starting off the Green and White's slate at 11:45 a.m. PDT, Kalinowski will compete in the 1500m run before Brown's double slate in the 400m and 200m at 1:18 and 4:05, respectively.
