PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior/sophomore Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week today (Wednesday, April 9) after clocking the top 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the Big Ten and fourth-best mark in the nation this season.
In his season debut in the steeplechase during Michigan's tri-meet with California and Virginia, Ferlic won the event in a time of 8:47.91, which currently ranks first in the Big Ten by more than three seconds and is also fourth in the NCAA.
The Big Ten weekly honor is Ferlic's second of his career, as he also won the award last season on May 8, 2013, after running the second-fastest time in the conference in his first-ever 3,000-meter steeplechase race.
Ferlic and the Wolverines will not compete this weekend, but will return to action the following weekend with members of the team traveling to the Mt. SAC Relays (April 17-19), Kentucky Relays (April 18-19) and the Beach Invitational (April 19).
