Detroit Mercy Women - Women Honor Seniors as Titans Edge Oakland in Dual

DETROIT (4/5/2014) -- It was senior day for 11 women on the University of Detroit Mercy women's outdoor track and field team at the 9th Annual Dual vs. Oakland Saturday. The team came together to win 117-64 in the head-to-head dual match with Oakland with the Titans now 7-2 overall against the Golden Grizzlies.
The women's team recognized its graduating class of Liz Arroyo, Stephanie Blanchard, Stephanie Cuniberti, Ciara Curley-Poppe, Torrie Eger, Brandee Hart, Rachel Hofsess, Allyson Koglin, Whitney Rogers, Bri Soule, and Kayla Zauner who were all honored during the event for their years competing as Titans.
The Titans continuously came out on top over Oakland throughout the competition.
Zauner won the javelin making her debut in the event throwing a distance of 28.40m/93-02.
Koglin won the hammer throw with a toss of 47.75m/156-07 in a large field of seven throwers. Koglin was also second in the discus with a mark of 35.97m/118-00.
Freshman Ashley Bussing made it three women's victories in throwing events for Detroit as she won the shot put with a toss of 12.99m/42-07.
In the long jump, Rogers placed first with a jump of 5.19m/17-00. She also went on to win the triple jump with a leap of 11.58m/37-11.
Senior Louisa Coppola ran the 3000 meter race and finished in first place with a time of 10:09.21. She also won the 1500 meter run at 4:51.50 beating the second place runner whose time was 5:04.78.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Hart won with a time of 14.78 setting a new meet record. She was not done there as she also won the 200 meters with a mark of 26.02 barely edging out sophomore teammate Allison Garner at 26.05.
Sophomore Alani Letang came in first in the 400 meter run with a mark of 59.38.
In the women's 100 meter dash, junior Jasmine Greene won with a time of 12.49 making her debut in the event while Garner was not far off the mark at 12.56 in second place. Freshman Jayona Dent clocked in at 12.85 in third place.
Marchant captured a win in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.73.
The relays were the final events of the day with the 4x100 meter squad running a time of 48.93. The 4x400m foursome clocked in with a time of 4:07.99.
Daniel Grant won the Tommy Titan Kid's Race with a time of 18.34. The race featured mascots Tommy Titan from UDM and Clawz from Oakland running against children nine and under in a 100 meter race. Alex Harris won the Open Mile title with a time of 4:47.56. Both races were open to anyone and the mile run included many Titan alums who made their return to the UDM campus.
The next meet for Detroit will be next weekend with two meets on the schedule. The Titans will compete at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday and Sunday and a second group of Titans will be at the Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational on Saturday hosted by Siena Heights in Adrian, Michigan.
