DMU - Titans Place Fourth at Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (3/29/2014) -- The temperature was right around 40 degrees in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the University of Detroit Mercy men's outdoor track and field team began the outdoor track and field season Friday and Saturday at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati that saw the UDM men finish fourth overall.
In the scored meet, the Titans finished fourth overall with 73 points out of 16 teams finishing behind Cincinnati (150.5 points), Miami, Ohio (103 points), and Kentucky, (99 points).
Freshman Ryan Leahy set a UDM rookie record in the 10,000m with a mark of 31:32.91 and a new personal record as he finished fifth in a field of 35. Leahy broke the mark of Jon Hans' mark of 31:47.18 set back in April 2005.
Sophomore Derek Gielarowski was sixth with a PR of 31:35.83 and sophomore Colin Creagh ran Detroit for the first time in 13 months since the 2013 Horizon League Indoor Championships as he had a time of 32:20.33 to finish 15th. Titan senior Sam Felton finished with a PR of his own at 32:42.50.
Brandon Wilks started off the outdoor campaign with a time of 11.16 in the 100 meter dash and a second place finish. Senior Charles Anthony was in fourth at 11.29.
Anthony came out on top in the 200 meter dash over Wilks as Anthony was second with a time of 22.17 and Wilks was seventh at 23.02.
Senior Joe Raffin returned to competition for Detroit against Cincinnati as the fifth year senior was second in the 400 meters with a mark of 49.63. Sophomore Colton Wirgau was sixth at 51.74.
Freshman Ilia Panev made his outdoor debut coming in sixth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.23. Senior Steven Ivanics was just behind at 15.24. Panev was also sixth in the long jump at 6.19m.
The men's 4x100 relay squad of Ivanics, Wilks, freshman Khalil Parris, and Anthony came in second with a time of 43.00.
Senior Eric Lewis made his return to the hammer throw after not participating in the outdoor track season a year ago. He finished fourth with a throw of 56.31m for the Titans. Lewis was also sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 42.41m.
The next meet for Detroit will be the ninth annual Dual vs. Oakland. UDM will host Oakland on April 5 starting at 2:30 p.m. with the throwing events at Titan Field. There is no charge for admission. For more information on the OU Dual, please click HERE.
