DMU - Marchant Places Second in 400 Meters as Outdoor Season Begins

CINCINNATI (3/29/2014) -- The temperature was right around 40 degrees in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the University of Detroit Mercy women's outdoor track and field team began the outdoor track and field season Friday and Saturday at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati that featured UDM graduate student Shannon Marchant place second in the 400 meter dash.
In the scored meet, the UDM women finished fourth overall with 78 points out of 12 teams finishing behind Cincinnati (219 points), Marquette (141 points), and Indianapolis, (97.50 points).
Marchant continued where she left off after the indoor season as she finished second in the 400m in Cincinnati. Marchant's time of 58.63 which was just off her mark of 57.15 from the Horizon League Indoor Championships where she placed second for Detroit back on March 1-2 at Yougnstown State.
In the heptathlon, sophomore Aisha Potts-Tyre won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.11. Potts-Tyre finished as the top Titan overall placing fourth in the multi-events with 3851 points. Junior Hana Hunt was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.43m first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.49. Hunt finished with 3843 points and was right behind Potts-Tyre in fifth place. Graduate student Bri Soule finished seventh overall with 3555 points making her debut in the outdoor event.
Sophomore Alani Letang was sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.32.
Junior Sara Taylor was sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:59.52.
Senior Louisa Coppola was fifth in the 5000 meter run with a mark of 17:31.78.
Freshman Samantha Zakalowski was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.05 which was just ahead of junior Jasmine Greene's run of 1:11.34, which was the first career mark recorded by Greene in the event.
The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Jayona Dent, Greene, senior Brandee Hart, and sophomore Allison Garner came in second with a time of 49.58.
Senior Whitney Rogers was second in the long jump at 10.66m and she was also sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.79m.
Senior Allyson Koglin was eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.76m.
In the 10000m, freshman Devon Sutton ran for a time of 38:35.18 to finish fourth as she made her debut in the long distance event.
The next meet for Detroit will be the ninth annual Dual vs. Oakland. UDM will host Oakland on April 5 starting at 2:30 p.m. with the throwing events at Titan Field. There is no charge for admission. For more information on the OU Dual, please click HERE.
