UDM - Elite Throws Competition Highlights Findlay Open in Ohio

DETROIT (1/30/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's indoor track and field teams will head to Findlay, Ohio to participate in the Findlay Open to be held at the Malcolm Athletic Center starting on Friday afternoon.
Both the UDM men's and women's indoor track and field teams are coming off perfect weekends in their respective dual meets at the IPFW Quadrangular in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Saturday. The women went 4-0 with a 110-55 win over IPFW, a 123-19 downing of IUPUI, upending Butler 106-49, and then finishing off Xavier (Ohio) 111-48. The men were 3-0 posting a 100-52 score over Xavier (Ohio), a 110-18 total over IUPUI, and an 89-55 win over Butler.
Last Week's Horizon League Top Field Athletes of the Week
Senior Eric Lewis represented the men and senior Allyson Koglin represented the women as were both recognized as Top Indoor Field Athletes in the Horizon League for their efforts last week. Lewis captured first-place in both the weight throw (18.47m) and shot put (14.31m) while Koglin posted top five finishes in both the weight throw (15.79m) and the shot put (11.33m).
Last Week's Horizon League Top Runners of the Week
On the track, the Top Indoor Runners in the Horizon League from the Titans last week were freshman Brandon Wilks on the men's side and sophomore Allison Garner from the women's team. Wilks placed first in the 60 meter dash (7.03) and second in the 200 meters (22.69). Garner returned to her home state of Indiana and placed first in the 60m dash with a time of 7.86. She was also second in the 200m dash with a time of 26.76.
Starting Friday at 3:45 p.m., the throwers will take center stage in the 2014 Elite Throws Competition at the Findlay Open. Several of the top throwers in Division I, II, and III and also unattached athletes from all over will be present to compete in the weight throw and the shot put. Senior Eric Lewis of the Titans is the two-time defending Horizon League champion in the men's weight throw and his mark set in the 2013 Horizon League Indoor Championships ranked 30th in the 2014 preseason poll.
Freshmen Brandon Wilks, Khalil Parris, Ryan Leahy, and Ilia Panev all performed well for Detroit last week at IPFW. Wilks was first in the 60m and second in the 200m. Parris captured a win in the 400 meters with a mark 50.19. Leahy's time of 8:41.60 in the 3000 meter distance race moved him into the No. 7 spot on the Titan all-time record list. Panev made his debut in the long jump and leaped 6.21m to place second in the event.
Female Fleet of Fast Feet
In the women's 400 meter run last week at IPFW, junior Jasmine Greene at 59.75, graduate student Shannon Marchant at 1:00.06, and freshman Jayona Dent at 1:01.10 were 1-2-3 in the event. Marchant and Greene were not done there as they joined senior Brandee Hart and junior Hana Hunt in the 4x400 meter relay and finished with a time of 3:59.90. The time was good for first and just off the team's top mark of the season of 3:59.81 set at the Red Simmons Invitational at Michigan on Jan. 18.
The UDM men's and women's teams will mostly head to Youngstown, Ohio for the YSU National Invite on Fri. Feb. 7-8. The Titans will also send a group to Windsor, Ontario on Sun. Feb. 9 for the Windsor Team Challenge.
