KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team heads to the University of Minnesota for the Jack Johnson Classic on Friday and Saturday for the teams first two-day meet.
The annual Jack Johnson Classic honors the memory of Jack Johnson, a long-time equipment manager for the Gophers. Along with WMU the meet features Augustana, Drake, Iowa, Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Southern Florida.
Last season the Broncos took third place with 128 points, just falling shy of North Dakota State's 135. Then-senior Iris Campbell helped WMU to a solid finish by racking up 28 points, including a win in the pentathlon.
The Jack Johnson Classic will be the first meet this season that Western Michigan competes in the pentathlon. Kathryn Pickett, Mallory Myler and Kara Craig kick off Friday's action at 4 p.m. with the pentathlon's 60 meter hurdles.
WMU also competes in the 5,000 meter run and the 200 meter dash on Friday evening before a full slate of events on Saturday.
