ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in its first meet as a full squad at the annual Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. The Wolverines won seven individual-event titles against Notre Dame, as well as several other local schools and club athletes.
Michigan opened its season a week ago at Grand Valley with only its sprinters, jumpers and throwers in action. U-M's talented distance squad joined them at today's meet for the first full team effort of the season.
Fifth-year senior Kiley Tobel's (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) school-record setting mark in the pole vault headlined a strong outing by the Maize and Blue. She topped her own school record set in 2012 by .75 inches with a vault of 4.25 meters (13-11.25). U-M swept the pole vault, as juniors Meghan Lark (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) and Victoria Wesley (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) followed behind Tobel in second and third place, respectively, each clearing the bar at 3.65 meters (11-11.75). The mark is a new personal best for Lark.
The Wolverines also swept the mile run, with senior Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt), senior/junior Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and sophomore/freshman Taylor Manett (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) claiming the top three spots, respectively. By the last lap, Weschler held a significant lead, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:54.50. Leptich edged Manett at the line by .01 seconds, finishing in 4:59.76, while Manett ran 4:49.77.
Sophomore Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) dominated the short sprints and hurdles, winning a trio of events. The most exciting win of the day proved to be her win in the 60-meter hurdles. She ran 8.37 in the prelims and chopped that time to 8.264 (8.27) in the finals to edge Notre Dame's Jade Barber (8.270) by .006 seconds. Ofili also earned top honors in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.56 and 200-meter dash in 24.45.
In her collegiate debut in a Michigan uniform, freshman Jaimie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) recorded her first victory with a time of 1:34.76 in the 600-meter dash. In a tightly contested race between Phelan and Notre Dame's Megan Yanik, Phelan began to pull away with about 50 meters to go and outkicked Yanik, who stopped the clock at 1:35.67, by .91 seconds.
In the 3,000-meter run, the 2013 Big Ten cross country champion, freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), ran a winning time of 9:15.82, which was nearly eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Junior/sophomore Anna Pasternak (Brighton, Mich./Hartland) clocked a 3,000-meter time of 10:08.52, which was good enough for third place.
In a stacked field in the 800-meter run, which featured four post-collegiate runners, junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) ran to a fourth-place finish in a personal-best time of 2:08.55. Former Wolverine and 2012 Olympian Nicole (Edwards) Sifuentes took top honors in a U-M Indoor Track Building facility record of 2:05.33. Former Wolverine and 2013 Big Ten indoor mile champion Amanda Eccleston took third place in 2:06.73.
In addition to U-M's sweep of the pole vault, it also recorded several other top-three performances.
Fifth-year senior Sara Nitz (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) and freshman Aaron Howell (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) placed second and third in the high jump, respectively. Nitz, Howell and Notre Dame's Carly Loeffel each cleared the bar at 1.71 meters (5-7.25) and failed to clear the next height. However, Loeffel soared over 1.71 meters on her first attempt, while Nitz had one miss and Howell had two misses at that height, resulting in a win for Loeffel.
Howell also took third in the long jump with a mark of 5.71 meters (18-9) behind teammate senior Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood), who finished runner-up after making her mark in the sand at 5.94 meters (19-6).
Senior/junior Elly Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) rounded out U-M's top-three efforts, placing third in the weight throw with a new career-best toss of 16.44 meters (53-11.25).
The Wolverines will take a week off from competition before going head to head with Michigan State in a dual meet for the second straight year on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. at Grand Valley State's Kelly Family Sports Center.
