CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced Tuesday, Jan. 14, that women's track and field junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) has been named the MAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. The award marks the first time in the 2013-14 season and the second time in Voronko's career that she has been honored for her performance in indoor track.
Voronko set her standards high in her first appearance of the 2013-14 campaign for the Green and White. The Stavropol, Russia native set personal records in the mile run and the 800m run in EMU's victory over Detroit mercy and Oakland at the EMU Triangular, Jan. 10. The Eagles ended the meet with 119 points, followed by Detroit (82) and Oakland (31). Voronko set the winning pace in the mile after finishing in 4:47.12 and was the only competitor to finish under the five-minute mark, crossing the line 15 seconds before the runner-up from Detroit. She then bested her time in the 800m, finishing with a 2:12.77 mark, nearly seven seconds before the second-place runner. To wrap up the meet, Voronko powered through the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay to give EMU another victory as the team combined for a time of 4:00.51.
EMU will make the short jaunt to the University of Michigan for the Simmons/Harvey Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 18.
