Detroit Mercy - Women Have Strong Showing at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. (1/10/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's indoor track and field team competed at the Bowen Fieldhouse on the campus of Eastern Michigan on Friday evening and came out with a second place finish with 82 points.



The event was a triangular meet with Detroit, Oakland, and the host team from Eastern Michigan competing and the UDM women's team claiming a second place finish behind host EMU with 82 points but ahead of third place Oakland who had 31 points. #BeatOakland



Graduate student Shannon Marchant ran a great race and was second in the 400 meters at 58.88. She narrowly missed topping the field coming just .02 behind the leader but still pushing her way into the Titan top ten in the No. 8 position. A pair of Titan runners came in right behind her as junior Jasmine Greene (58.88) was third and freshman Jayona Dent (1:01.16) was fourth in a field of nine.



Senior Allyson Koglin also had a big win coming in with a weight throw of 15.87 meters in her first throw of the finals that set a new personal best and held up for the victory. Koglin was also third in the shot put at 11.69m.



Freshman Ashley Bussing made her debut in the weight throw at 12.01 meters but she really came through strong in the shot put taking first place with a launching of 12.16 meters.



In the women's mile run, senior Louisa Coppola nearly broke the five minute barrier timing in at 5:02.71 and sliding into the new No. 5 all-time Titan-best slot. Coppola also was second in the 800 meter run with a mark of 2:19.75. Also in the 800 meter run, freshman Navica Colonna debuted in the event and had a time of 2:34.17.



Graduate student Bri Soule made her debut in the 60 meter hurdles as she ran 12.36. She was also fifth in the long jump at 4.94m.



Sophomore Allison Garner came in second with a time of 7.94 in the 60 meter dash while senior Brandee Hart was also second but in the 60 meter hurdles timing in at 9.13.



The next meet for the Titans is scheduled for Jan. 18 as UDM will compete in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan.
