YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Though Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team had its first taste of competition with Jan. 10's EMU Triangular, the Eagles did not show any first-day jitters as they dominated their home meet with a victory over the University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University. The Eagles won with 155 points, followed by Detroit (69) and Oakland (42), after claiming victories in 13-of-14 events on the evening, conceding only the 3000m run to their competitors.

Redshirt-senior Teron Turner (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Southfield Senior) started off the meet in an according fashion as he set a personal-best in the weight throw after recording an 18.98-meter/62-foot 3.75-inch launch. Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) also claimed second-place in the event. In the shot put, rookie Eagle Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley) did not fail to impress as he threw 16.14-meters/52-feet 11.50-inches to clinch the win. Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) and Ryan McNulty (Huron, Ohio-Huron) rounded out the top-three for the evening.

Despite the performances in the throwing area, many eyes were focused on Max Babits (Fowlerville, Mich.-Fowlerville), as he broke his own previously-held Eastern Michigan school record in the pole vault after clearing 5.41-meters/17-feet 9-inches. Other Eagles enjoyed success in the event, as Dylan Stites (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) and Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) both cleared 4.55-meters/14-feet 11-inches. The mark was a personal-best for Ijah, who also set another personal record in the 60m hurdles, which he won in 8.23. The Green and White reaped in the benefits of a 1-2-3 sweep in the hurdles, as Ijah was closely pursued by Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) and Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior).

To wrap up the field events, the Eagles dominated the jumps as Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka), and Aaron Benton (Dryden, Mich.-Almont) each earned a win for the team. Brown leapt for a distance of 7.02-meters/23-feet in the long jump and Benton soared over 2.05-meters/6-feet 8-inches in the high jump. Current EMU triple jump record-holder Scott remained dominant in the event, giving a 15.02-meter/49-foot 3.5-inch performance.

On the track, the Eagles had a pair of tight first- and second-place finishes. Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) finished the mile in 4:15.60, just .17 seconds before teammate Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline). Later in the meet, Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) overtook Ian Hancke (Haslett, Mich.-Haslett) in the final strides of the 800m run, earning a first-place finish in 1:55.20.

The final three individual victories came from Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Vista Del Lago) and Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower). Williams took the 400m dash in 49.12, while Bolton fittingly bolted to a personal-best 6.86 in the 60m dash and a 21.66 finish in the 200m dash.

Ending the meet was the 4x400m relay team of Elam, Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wisc.-Bradford), Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt), and Josh George (Toronto, Ontario-Frontinac Secondary), whose 3:22.91 mark established a four-second margin of victory over Detroit Mercy.

"The staff is really pleased with today's performances," beamed Head Coach John Goodridge. "Obviously we haven't had much practice time since the break, but we're really encouraged across the board. There were some very solid efforts and certainly a highlight for Max to set a school record in our first meet; it's a great way for him individually to get things started. We'll be back to work on Monday like everybody else, and we're looking forward to that process."

The Eagles will jump right back into action Saturday, Jan. 18 when they make the short trip to the University of Michigan to compete in the Simmons/Harvey Invitational.
