Chargers could be found all over the place among the top finishers in the sprint events at the two-day Oiler Opener indoor track meet this weekend in Findlay, Ohio.
Members of the Hillsdale College men's track team won the 60, 400 and 4x400 relay, and finished among the top three in the 200 to get the 2013-14 season off to a flying start.
Hillsdale took three of the top four spots in the 60 meter dash, led by winner Damian Matthews, making his collegiate debut. He won the race in 7.05 seconds, just ahead of teammates Alexander Mexicotte (third, 7.08) and Joshua Hamilton *fourth, 7.10).
Senior Maurice Jones, an All-American caliber runner who battled injuries last spring, came back in an impressive way with a first-place finish in the 400 meter dash, picking up an NCAA provo time of 49.54.
Mexicotte later took second in the 200 meter dash at 22.74 seconds, while the 4x400 relay team broke the tape in 3:25.64, four seconds off a provo time.
The Chargers return a strong group of hurdlers, led by veterans Matthew Raffin and Elliot Murphy. They both started strong at Findlay by finishing second and third in the 60 hurdles, respectively. Joining them near the top was newcomer Ty Etchemendy, who finished fifth in the 60 hurdles, then went on to win the triple jump, covering 44 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
Pole vaulter Matt Harris got off to a storng start, clearing 15 feet, 1 inch. He's already just two inches away from an NCAA provo mark after one meet.
Senior Brett Dailey took fourth in the weight throw for Hillsdale and his mark of 56 feet, 3/4 inch was also good for an NCAA provo mark.
