CMU - Track and Field Begins Indoor Season at Holiday Classic

SAGINAW, Mich. - The Central Michigan men's and women's track and field teams started the indoor season strong at the Saginaw Valley State University Holiday Classic Friday afternoon.
Senior Renaldo Powell led the Chippewas in the 60m hurdles with a first place finish in 8.29, while freshman Quincy Briggs ran to a fourth place finish in his first collegiate race, clocking in at 8.65.
Sophomore sprinter Markala Goodson led the women's squad in the 60m dash with a 7.88 first place finish. Freshman Chantel Edwards and sophomore Olivia Shelton rounded out the heat with third (7.95) and sixth place (8.09) finishes respectively.
The Chippewas earned the top-two spots in the women's 400m dash from the sophomore-freshman duo Lexi Meilke and Cadeisha Browning. Meilke ran to a first place finish in 59.96, just edging Browning who finished runner-up in 1:00.70.
On the men's side, freshman Ja'Corey Lipsey finished the 400m dash in 41:05 en route to a second place finish.
CMU women dominated in the 200m dash sweeping the top-three spots. Senior sprinter Kelsey Ritter led trio with a 25.56 first place finish. Juniors Ravyn Baxter and Diamond Hamilton finished second and third, clocking in at 25.77 and 26.21 respectively.
Junior Curt Mitchell finished runner-up in the men's 200m dash, crossing the line in 22.47.
In the 4x400m relay, Baxter, Ritter, Meilke and Browning claimed the relay with a time of 4:03.82, nearly five seconds faster than the runner-up Cardinals from SVSU.
The Chippewas took first place in the men's and women's weight throw from senior Calvin Jackson and redshirt freshman Kylee Dobbelaera. Jackson won the men's competion with a throw of 55-09, while Dobbelaera's first place throw of 50-10 was the first of her collegiate career.
The Chippewas are on competition hiatus until the Jack Skoog Open on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track Bay.
